BOOKS I HAVE READ reading diary, 1920 Jan-May.

Volume printed to serve as a reading record (223 pgs., Dodd, Mead and Company, 1914) in which Foushee, a teenage girl still in school, outlined her reading of 16 novels during early months of 1920. The subject of the majority of the volumes was French history, particularly the French Revolution. Most were written by Alexandre Dumas as part the Marie Antoinette Romance series, including ANDRÉE DE TAVERNAY, THE QUEEN'S NECKLACE, ANGE PITOU AND THE TAKING OF THE BASTILLE, LA COMPTESS DE CHARNEY, JOSEPH BALSAMO, THE MAGICIAN, MEMOIRS OF A PHYSICIAN, and LE CHEVALIER DE MAISON-ROUGE. Other books included A FRIEND OF CAESAR, TRILBY, A HOUSE-BOAT ON THE STYX, LAVENDER AND OLD LACE, THE COURT OF BELSHAZZAR, THE STRONG HOURS, A GENTLEMAN OF FRANCE, and EVELINA. In addition to providing information regarding author, title, and classification for each volume, Foushee included the length of time it took her to read it, memorable quotes or segments of the plot, as well as a short review (e.g, "...I firmly believed that Dumas' supper did not agree with him and the ham and eggs made him dream this horrid nightmare." p. 19). Foushee's reviews also often included her comments in French as well as observations about class conflict within the novels.
